ARSENAL TARGET ONCE ADMITTED HE LOVES CRISTIAN ROMERO – AND NOW TOTTENHAM WANT HIM TOO

Arsenal and Tottenham want Lisandro Martinez – and he has outlined his admiration for Spurs defender Cristian Romero.

Left-sided centre backs are very much in vogue in modern football.

Many managers now see a left-footed centre back as a necessity, opening up the pitch with certain angles in build-up play.

If you’re a left-footed centre back with passing ability, you’re bound to attract real interest – and that’s certainly the case with Lisandro Martinez.

ARSENAL AND TOTTENHAM WANT LISANDRO MARTINEZ

Ajax star Martinez has excelled in the Netherlands having joined from Defensa y Justicia in 2019.

The 24-year-old isn’t the tallest centre back at around 5ft 9in tall, but he is a great passer of the ball and aggressive in his defending.

Martinez is a two-time Eredivisie title winner and is now a wanted man in the Premier League.

Arsenal have already made a bid of €30million (£26million) according to The Athletic, which Ajax rejected.

What’s interesting is that Arsenal may face a real battle with their North London rivals Tottenham.

90Min claim that Tottenham are keeping a close eye on Martinez as they also chase a left-footed centre back.

Ben Davies has filled that role admirably but Tottenham now fancy Martinez after being unable to sign Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan.

Ben Davies has filled that role admirably but Tottenham now fancy Martinez after being unable to sign Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan.

Arsenal look to be favourites for Martinez but one interesting thing to note is his love for one Tottenham player.

Martinez plays alongside Spurs star Cristian Romero with Argentina and ranks him as one of the top defenders around.

Speaking to Ole back in October 2021, Martinez named Romero as one of five defenders he loves to watch and learn from.

Martinez put Romero up there with Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte, Presnel Kimpembe and Marquinhos.

“Of the great defenders, I look at and like Ruben Dias and Laporte from City, Kimpembe and Marquinhos from PSG, Cuti Romero… There are many of a very good level,” said Martinez.

If Tottenham do make their move for Martinez, the chance to join Romero may just be too strong for him to ignore.

Arsenal need to be wary of that connection, and would be wise to go back to Ajax with a new offer – or risk Tottenham coming in to give Martinez a reunion with Romero and the chance to play in the Champions League.
